Foster Care Review Board Calls for Volunteers in Arizona

The Foster Care Review Board (FCRB) is reaching out to communities across Arizona, urging compassionate individuals to step forward and volunteer in support of children navigating the foster care system. With an urgent need for advocacy and assistance, the FCRB emphasizes the vital role volunteers can play in transforming the lives of these vulnerable children, particularly highlighting the plight of black children who are disproportionately represented in foster care.

Statistics from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services paint a concerning picture, revealing that black children are not only more likely to enter foster care but also tend to remain in the system for extended periods. This overrepresentation underscores the importance of community involvement in providing the necessary support and advocacy to ensure all children in care receive the attention and opportunities they deserve.

Volunteering with the FCRB or the Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) program presents a unique opportunity to be a beacon of hope and a source of consistent support for foster children. Volunteers are instrumental in improving the wellbeing and outcomes for these children, helping them to overcome barriers and paving the way for their success.

The FCRB operates across all 15 counties in Arizona, with a five-member panel in each county making recommendations to the Juvenile Court. Volunteers, appointed by the Presiding Juvenile Court Judge, do not require any special training prior to their appointment and come from diverse backgrounds. The board is calling on anyone over the age of 21, who can pass a background check, is available one weekday per month, and can complete a one- or two-day training session, to consider applying. More information about how to become a volunteer with the FCRB is available at

For those interested in a more direct role in advocating for a child's best interests, the CASA program offers an invaluable chance to make a significant impact. As a CASA volunteer, individuals are tasked with visiting their assigned child once a month, advocating for their needs, and making recommendations to the Court regarding their placement and permanency plan. Prospective CASA volunteers must be at least 21 years old, pass a background check, commit to 10-12 hours per month, and complete 30 hours of pre-service training. Additional details on joining the CASA program can be found at

The call to action from the Foster Care Review Board is clear: Arizona's children in foster care need your help. By volunteering your time and energy, you can play a crucial role in ensuring these children have the support they need to thrive. Together, we can honor the legacy of those who have fought for equality and justice by making a tangible difference in the lives of children in foster care today.
